On her way to work in a blinding snowstorm, Victoria Treadwell, dispatcher for the Charlevoix Sheriff’s Office, sees a car lurching across the road behind her. When it crashes into a tree, she goes back to help. A blonde woman is bent over the steering wheel and a toddler is in the back seat. When the ambulance arrives, they are unable to save the driver whose name is Carly Yellowwood. Pete Manstead, Charlevoix Sheriff, asks the pathologist the cause of death. The perplexed pathologist says that while there were no signs of drug use in his autopsy, Carly died of an overdose. Now Pete knows Carly was forced to take those drugs. They are hunting a murderer. Sheriff Pete is firmly of the opinion that since Carly was divorced and was seeing someone new, that it’s a crime of passion. Victoria, who wants to adopt Carly’s motherless child, thinks the motive is far darker.
